Big test for Maryland GOP next Saturday, illegal immigration stance pivotal

Update:  I’m just now seeing this story from the Baltimore Sun of two days ago about Dr. Wargotz getting out of the race, but it interests me to note that the supposed knowledgeable Sun political writer can never seem to mention the fact that Sam Hale, a Tea Party candidate is still in the running.

My fixation with this contest continues!

That old saw, people are policy, is true and next Saturday, December 11th, the MDGOP will set a ‘policy’ for the next four years with its choice for Chairman and other leaders of the, at present, floundering MDGOP.

Richard Falknor, writing at Blue Ridge Forum, has another insightful post on the topic which I urge you to read.   He cites two areas of critical importance for county central committee voters to consider:

1. The health of the future GOP in the Old Line State will depend on strict neutrality in all contested primaries.

[….]

2. Maryland is regrettably a “sanctuary state” for illegal aliens.  [Falknor then goes on to discuss the criteria for a leader who must not be soft on the issue.]

In that section on illegal aliens he says:

If the state central committee selects a new party chief employed by a national organization working for “comprehensive amnesty” (and the new chief does not repudiate amnesty)….

I’m guessing that is a reference to MDGOP chair front-runner Mary Kane who has been employed by the US Chamber of Commerce.  The US Chamber of Commerce is well-known to have supported amnesty and other methods of expanding the worker base.  Or, maybe he is referring to Alex Mooney who also has not been clear on where he stands on the illegal immigration issue, but I don’t think he works or worked for a group that supports amnesty, does anyone know?

When candidates make their presentations next Saturday, voters should ask each candidate to clarify his or her position on one of the hottest issues in Maryland—illegal immigration.

And, then this is Falknor’s last paragraph to entice you to visit his post.

The kind of home Maryland Tea Partiers and grass-roots conservatives will have in the state GOP organization will be clearly indicated by who is selected chairman when the state central committee acts next Saturday. These are watershed times for freedom in America, as well as for freedom in Maryland. National GOP elected officials and organizations are having to come to terms with Tea Partiers and the conservative grass roots faster and more fundamentally than they had ever expected. If the Maryland GOP wishes to become effective, it will have to embrace, not shun, these strong popular forces.

See Michael Swartz at Monoblogue yesterday to see who is still in the running.

Responses

  1. I remain convinced that the GOP will never recover in Maryland without developing at least a significant minority base in Prince George’s County.

The GOP’s statewide candidates cannot win without a substantial increase in votes from Prince George’s County.

The GOP’s statewide candidates will never receive a substantial number of votes in Prince George’s County as long as they fail to campaign in the county and the party fails to field candidates for state and local offices in the county. I would note that neither of the two 2010 statewide candidates seeking the state GOP chairmanship did anything to attract my vote or made any effort to support the few GOP candidates running for local office in Prince George’s County.

I’ve communicated my concerns about this to almost all of the candidates for party chairman. No candidate has replied. I don’t see any evidence at this time that any of the candidates consider Prince George’s County to be part of their constituency, and I don’t see any reason to support any of them for chairman.

I have received supportive replies from Moshe Starkman, candidate for 1st vice-chair, and Brian Grifiths for 3rd vice-chair and do support them for those offices.

    • Mr. Russell, I agree wholeheartedly that the MDGOP has to get a greater presence in PG County. I believe too that legal minority voters are beginning to understand that large numbers of illegal aliens in the state hurt the black community and legal immigrants first and foremost. Although that is just one issue (jobs competition) on which we should focus, the Maryland Conservative Action Network conference, which I am helping organize, is keenly aware of what you are saying. To that end we will be having a large segment of the January conference geared to reaching out to voters who share conservative ideals, not just the fiscal ones either! Check it out here:

MD CAN Conference scheduled for January 8th, 2011

And please consider attending and networking with like-minded Marylanders. We plan to be organized and ready in 2012 whether the MDGOP is or not!

  3. I believe that Alex Mooney has articulated his stance on illegal immigrants in Maryland. In one of his debates with his state senate challenger Ron Young who defeated him in that election a question was posed to both gentlemen that gave me pause as to Alex’s true conservative values at least in light of this issue. The question dealt with whether illegals that graduate from American high schools should be given the right to go to college and have the same rights as regular US citizens and Alex stated in his answer that he felt that these students should be treated as citizens. To me an illegal is illegal and these students shouldn’t be here in the first place. If these kids aren’t citizens then they do not deserve to go to college like US citizens and possibly take away a spot in a university from a US citizen.

Mooney’s position on this shows a soft stance. This soft stance could be a result of he and his wife being Hispanic themselves and having a sense of comradeship with the Hispanic peoples. But whatever his reasoning for being soft, Anyone running for the GOP Chair should not be soft on this issue as we conservatives must fight this issue tooth and nail as illegals are taking jobs away from Maryland citizens right and left every day under the noses of our public officials that are charged with stopping this.
