I just received an email from President Obama. (Do you hear my squeals of excitement?) I’m on his campaign email list, but this isn’t from the campaign. Here’s what it’s about:
Today, a new grassroots organization is being launched: Organizing for Action.
Following in the footsteps of the campaign you built, Organizing for Action will be an unparalleled force in American politics. It will work to turn our shared values into legislative action — and it’ll empower the next generation of leaders in our movement.
Then follows a video from Michelle Obama, which you can watch here. As she speaks, second-long clips of lots of groups of people are shown, with probably every type of person that the Obama campaign identified as a good target — old, young, black, white, Hispanic, disabled, even a veteran!, campaigning in big crowds at rallies and in little groups making signs, meeting Barack Obama — and everybody so happy! Oh, it’s just all the Americans who count in a glorious rainbow of what America is meant to be!
Speaking in the tone and pace of a nursery school teacher, Michelle tells us that winning an election doesn’t complete the job, but it gives us the chance to make America what we want it to be. It’s up to you. Even the structure of this new organization is up to you. After all, it’s your movement. It can be whatever you want to make it. Michelle says:
“Barack spoke to me about the world as it is and the world as it should be, and it is our obligation to bridge that divide.”
Ah, the utopia we could have if only those rich people would get out of our way. The email continues:
We may have started this as a long shot presidential primary campaign in 2007, but it’s always been about more than just winning an election. Together, we’ve made our communities stronger, we’ve fought for historic legislation, and we’ve brought more people than ever before into the political process.
We have the power to do even more to change our politics and our country for the better. With Organizing for Action, you’ll have every resource you need to do it.
But it starts with you. This new organization is in your hands.
I’m so excited to see what you all do next — and so grateful to be part of it.
The box at the bottom says it is paid for by Organizing for Action. I’m sure we’ll hear more about who is running this and what they intend to do.
I wish I had even a little bit of hope that the Republicans could come up with something to mobilize their people. I wonder if they’re even thinking about it. Obama is going to use those TENS OF MILLIONS of email addresses, his campaign’s knowledge of what hits the buttons of all those slices of the electorate they identified, their get-out-the-vote capabilities, and all the rest, to push his agenda.
What it’s ultimately about is keeping his organization going to win the House of Representatives in 2014 and control the entire Congress along with the White House. Meanwhile he’s got to keep his people excited and active.
But I’m not sure it’s going to be as great as they expect it to be. Already a lot of people are feeling deceived, especially when they got their first paychecks of the year and saw that it’s not just the rich whose taxes went up. A lot of people aren’t so hot on his ideas on gun control, even though Obama was counting on them to be. We’ll see. If he can mobilize his people to get even one piece of legislation passed that wouldn’t otherwise, I’ll be impressed. And maybe he can. But I think he believes that he has a huge, permanent following, and I think he’s wrong. I pray he’s wrong.
