Help Save Maryland helps you answer “Dream Act” pushers’ lies

Maryland’s leading grassroots group combating illegal immigration in Maryland, Help Save Maryland, has prepared this very useful list of points the proponents of taxpayer funding of college tuition for illegals will be making.

Here is how you answer them!

Use this list to respond to letters to the editor, politicians, fellow parishioners and family friends who (you will soon discover) do not know what they are talking about on the issue.

Fight the Lies about SB 167!

Maryland law SB-167, the so-called “MD DREAM Act” is a bad law that unjustly forces taxpayers to subsidize the higher education of illegal aliens.  Because it cannot be justified on the basis of law, economics, fairness or plain common sense, supporters must use emotions and lies to advance their agenda.

Here’s what to say when you hear these lies about SB 167

________________

When they say….
The MD DREAM Act will help the children of immigrants afford college.

You say…
First, any children of immigrants who were born in the US are automatically citizens and already eligible for in-state tuition if they meet the residency requirements.  This law only helps students who are themselves illegal aliens.

Second, college students are not “children.”  They are young adults, old enough to drive, work, marry, own a home and join the military.
________________

When they say….
What’s wrong with educating undocumented immigrants?

You say…
Maryland taxpayers have already given these students free K through 12 public school educations, at a cost of well over $150,000.
________________

When they say….
It’s wrong to deny anyone a college education

You say…
We are not talking about denying anyone a college education.  Illegal aliens can already go to Maryland colleges – they simply have to pay the same out-of-state tuition rate they’d pay if they stayed in their home country.
________________

When they say….
Where’s your compassion?

You say…
I have plenty of compassion for the students who will not be able to get into the Maryland school of their choice because they were displaced by illegal aliens.  And I have compassion for the families who will pay taxes they can’t afford to subsidize the education of illegal aliens.
________________

When they say….
These students were brought here as small children, they had no say in the matter and America is the only home they know.

You say…
Not necessarily!  SB-167 simply says you must have attended a Maryland high school for 3 years.  A student could come here in his or her teens and still qualify.   (Note that on the pro-SB-167 website, “EducatingMarylandKids.org” 2 of the 5 students highlighted as potential beneficiaries came here as teens.)
________________

When they say….
To qualify, their family needs to have paid taxes for the last three years.

You say…
Wrong!  The law says they must have FILED tax returns for the last three years.  Many people who file returns don’t pay any taxes.  In fact, due to programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit, it’s possible to get back more money than was deducted.
________________

When they say….
It’s a good investment in the long run to educate illegal aliens so that they can become productive, tax-paying members of society.

You say…
Even with a college degree, it is a felony to knowingly hire an illegal alien.  And while some employers may choose to hire undocumented maids, dishwashers and yard workers, nobody is going to hire an accountant, engineer or doctor without checking their immigration status. So taxpayers will see no return on their “investment.”
________________

When they say….
These people are already here, so we might as well accept them.  You can’t round them all up and deport them.

You say…
Nobody’s talking about deporting anyone.  We are talking about not subsidizing their college educations.
________________

When they say….
This law will only cost $X million per year.

You say…
How do you know?  Nobody knows how many illegal aliens now live in Maryland, how many more will move here because of this law, how many will take advantage of the in-state benefit, how many will stay in school for the full 4 years.  The fact is that this law is open-ended.  There is no limit to how much it could eventually cost.
________________

When they say….
To qualify, males need to register for the draft.

You say…
Young men already must register for the draft when they turn 18, even if they are here illegally.  SB-167 changes nothing.
________________

When they say….
To qualify, the student must sign an affidavit that he or she will file an application to become a permanent resident within 30 days after becoming eligible to do so.

You say…
First, many will never become eligible to become permanent residents because of immigration laws they have already broken.  Second, there is no way to enforce this provision.
________________

When they say….
Students admitted under the MD DREAM Act cannot be counted in the ratio of in-state students and therefore are not taking seats at our 4-year institutions from other Marylanders.

You say…
The ratio of in-state and out-of-state students accepted at Maryland colleges and universities is not mandated by law and changes every year, so this statement is meaningless.
________________

When they say….
The Maryland DREAM Act creates in-state status for active duty military families residing, domiciled, or stationed in Maryland as well as veterans who register within 4 years of discharge.

You say…
Wonderful!  Let’s keep that part of the law and dump the rest.
________________

When they say….
They and their families pay Maryland taxes, so it’s only fair they get Maryland tuition rates.

You say…
Every year, many Maryland citizens and legal immigrants residing in Maryland are denied admission to Maryland universities – they paid taxes too and unlike illegal aliens didn’t break the law.
________________

When they say….
It was the parents of these students who broke the law by bringing them here.  Why should their children suffer?

You say…
Children of criminals suffer all the time from the bad choices their parents make.  Children of bank robbers don’t get to keep the money their parents stole, so why should illegal aliens be able to benefit from the immigration laws their parents broke?
________________

When they say….
11 other states already give in-state tuition to illegal aliens.

You say…
True.  But several of these (TX, UT, FL, WI) are considering ending the practice, and one state (GA) prohibits illegal aliens from attending state colleges at any tuition rate.
________________

When they say….
The students will still have to pay their own way.  The MD DREAM Act doesn’t give them financial aid.

You say…
At least not yet.  History shows that once a state grants in-state tuition to illegal aliens, the next thing the pro-illegal groups do is successfully lobby for financial aid.  This has happened in Texas, New Mexico and California, among others.
________________

When they say….
The MD DREAM Act doesn’t give these students an advantage.  They will be competing with Maryland citizens for admissions on pure merit.

You say…
If these students are ethnic minorities, they will likely be given preferential admissions treatment in order to meet the diversity goals of Maryland college and university admission offices.
________________

When they say….
Making higher education more affordable will motivate illegal alien high school students to stay in school and avoid gangs.

You say…
Seriously?
________________

When they say….
The MD DREAM Act is endorsed by a long list of government, education, civic and religious groups.

You say…
All of which benefit directly or indirectly from the presence of more illegal aliens in Maryland.  Not one group that represents Maryland tax-payers has endorsed it.

This is going to be a tough fight—the November ballot referendum—and CASA de Maryland is gearing up to raise $10 million to get you to pay for subsidized college educations for people who broke the law.

Be ready to counter their arguments! Help spread the word and send this list to everyone you know!  We may not have their money, but we have the people power as demonstrated by the successful petition drive to put this issue directly to the voters!
