Saving Marriage meeting scheduled for Hagerstown on Thursday

Update January 19th: State Senator Allan Kittleman (R-Howard) resigns his leadership position over gay marriage issue, here.

Readers, this is an alert for a meeting to be held in Hagerstown, MD this coming Thursday evening to plan a strategy to defeat any Gay Marriage initiative in the Maryland General Assembly.

To interested Washington and Frederick County citizens (or others willing to travel!)– Here’s what we can do.

The fight to Protect Marriage in Maryland has gone into high gear as the Maryland legislature begins its session in Annapolis this week.

If you care about this issue, please plan to attend a meeting this coming Thursday, January 20th, 6 p.m. at Next Dimensions just outside of Funkstown, MD on MD Alt. Rt 40.

Leaders from Protect Marriage Maryland (PMM) will guide us in what needs to be done in the battle ahead.

From Robert Broadus at PMM:

The fight to Protect Marriage in Maryland has gone into high gear. We have been able to form a coalition with several other groups operating mostly out of Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties with experienced participants from previous marriage fights in DC and California. I am very hopeful that by working together and pulling in other counties we can achieve an outcome for marriage that is better than the results in those two jurisdictions.

Protect Marriage Maryland is a group that has been formed to preserve the current Maryland Family Law §2-201 which states that “Only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid in this State.”

We believe that the religious and natural reasons for retaining marriage between a man and a woman are essential for the proper structuring of families and to allow every child the best chance to be raised by his or her biological father and mother. We also recognize that further sections of the Maryland Family Law allow marriage only between people who are not closely related—having basis both in scientific reason and religious tradition, but which would also be jeopardized by any attempts to change the legal definition of marriage.

We greatly need the help and support of all Marylanders (as well as those outside of Maryland) who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman for life. Prior efforts to preserve marriage in California and DC have been defeated by a well-funded campaign that has now been brought to the state of Maryland. If we do not act, the bill will pass this spring. We cannot depend on the courts, nor can we expect our politicians to uphold the will of the people. The future of marriage depends on you—please come out so we can devise a strategy and discuss together what next steps to take.

We met Robert Broadus (US Naval Academy grad and former candidate for Congress) last week at the MD Conservative Action Network Conference in Annapolis and he further points out that Maryland has, percentage wise, a larger black population, many of whom care deeply about maintaining the present traditional marriage law, than California, and a larger faith community than DC.  Robert says if we can’t win in this next battleground, Maryland, then there is no hope in many other states.

In addition to Robert Broadus we expect Michael Ryman, the former Lt. Governor candidate for Brian Murphy to join us at Dimensions.

Thanks for listening, Ann Corcoran, Peggy Garrish and Judy Warner

Meeting January 20th, 6 p.m.

Next Dimensions
132 Old National Pike
Hagerstown, MD 21740
(this is a dinner meeting where we will order off the menu, but you do not need to eat if you just want to attend and learn)

But, we need you to tell us if you are coming so as not to totally disrupt the restaurant which has been very generous to conservative groups. If we have a large number attending we will eat in a portion of the large meeting room, so we need to know if you are coming. We also need to be able to reach you should we get extreme weather of some sort.

Please e-mail Peggy at ASAP if you are coming!

Pass this along to anyone you think might be interested, but be sure to tell them to let Peggy know they are coming!

If you cannot come but want to get on the mailing list for Protect Marriage Maryland, please e-mail Robert at
