Is “Prince of darkness” involved in local delegate race?

Update:  We now have confirmation on one of the questions asked in this post, see note below.

This is a post about my local Maryland House of Delegates race (district 2b) and Republican primary candidates Neil Parrott and Ted Brennan.  [Full disclosure I have supported Neil Parrott, the founder of our Hagerstown Tea Party, since he first began his campaign.]

I had no intention of writing about the campaign until I received Brennan’s extraordinarily negative flyer in the mail yesterday in which he calls Parrott a liar among other things.   Although mudslinging has been over-the-top in the Shank/Munson race for State Senate, this mean-spirited strategy of Brennan’s is something we aren’t used to here in Washington County.  So where is it coming from?

Did Brennan hire the “Prince of darkness?”

If he did then that explains a lot!  I had heard that the Brennan campaign was being coordinated by Laurence Scott, MD GOP chairman Audrey Scott’s son.  That only came to me as a rumor, but when I saw this post by Greg Kline today at Red Maryland, if it is true, that Scott is running the Brennan campaign, it explains Brennan’s personal attack methods. [Update:  see note below, we have confirmed that Mr. Brennan hired Scott—both Scotts.]

Last November, I wrote a piece pointing out that it might be ironic to use the name “Scott” and party unity in the same sentence. At the time there was an ultimately successful effort to make Audrey Scott the MDGOP chair with other candidates dropping out for the sake of party unity. I was the only one pointing out at the time that

Because as we have documented … her son Lawrence Scott is recognized as one of the most divisive forces within Maryland Republican politics. Mr. Scott is well know for his questionable tactics in his work for various Republican primary campaigns. Among these are assertions of false endorsements via robocall and misleading signs at polling places, allegations that he supported multiple candidates in the same primary and his misleading use of a fundraising entity (that ended up spending over eighty cents on every dollar for expenses and self promotion without giving a dime to GOP candidates, its expressed purpose). One senior MDGOP official told me he was a “purveyor of slash and burn politics”.

True to form, Mr. Scott had kept up his “slash and burn ways” as documented by the Annapolis Capital’s Eric Hartley. Dubbing him a local “Prince of Darkness” Hartley states that:

Such cookie-cutter negative campaigning works best when not exposed to the light of day, when you can’t see the guy pulling the strings. That’s why, like most political strategists, Scott prefers to work behind the scenes.”

Read all of Mr. Kline’s post, here.

Did the son learn his tactics from his mother?

One more reason why the MD GOP might blow up tomorrow— Audrey Scott (party over principle)!   Tea Party activists have no tolerance for and no reason to fear the likes of Scott.

Kline goes on to say at Red Maryland:

One opponent of a Scott client expressed fear of being sued or blacklisted by the Republican Party for speaking out. That fear has grown since Lawrence Scott’s mother, Audrey Scott, was named state GOP chairwoman last year.”  [Lol!  Kind of sound like the mafia doesn’t it?—Ed]

One additional unanswered question for me is what role does two-timing Robert Ehrlich play in all this since both candidates (Parrott and Brennan) express allegiance to Ehrlich and apparently Ehrlich has led both to expect his support at one time or another?

***Note:  It has been confirmed through campaign expense records that Mr. Brennan employed both Scotts.  Francine Scott (wife of Laurence) received $4000 from the Friends of Ted Brennan on 8/4 for printing and campaign materials.  Scott Strategies was paid an additional $4000 on 9/1 for direct mailing by a mailing house.  So that clears up any mystery about who was behind the very negative flyer voters in District 2b received this week—Audrey Scott’s son.

Now, that still leaves my other question.  Since we know how close Bob Ehrlich is to the Scotts, did he have any role in any of this?  If so, what would he gain from it?  I suspect we will never know the answer, but alas, as I am beginning to learn, secrecy and wheeling and dealing are par for the course for MD GOP insiders.

  2. I am sure all know Audrey Scott shut down all mention of Brian Murphy and his campaign.

  3. This is not surprising when you consider that same boy was working the wargotz campaign and mommy got rule 11 passed to assist bob erhlich. personally I am sick and tired of the MDGOP game players and I am going to put them straight, even if I have to run for a postion.
