Maryland Republicans’ pick for US Justice Department, Thomas Perez, is after Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio

This Washington Post headline caught my eye today:   U.S. may sue Arizona’s Sheriff Arpaio for not cooperating in investigation.    Surely, you all know the flamboyant sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona who the Justice Department is now eager to prove is a serial discriminator of Hispanics (or anyone “brown” as I’ve heard his detractors charge).   Here is the WaPo’s lead-in to the story:

A federal investigation of a controversial Arizona sheriff known for tough immigration enforcement has intensified in recent days, escalating the conflict between the Obama administration and officials in the border state.

Justice Department officials in Washington have issued a rare threat to sue Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio if he does not cooperate with their investigation of whether he discriminates against Hispanics. The civil rights inquiry is one of two that target the man who calls himself “America’s toughest sheriff.” A federal grand jury in Phoenix is examining whether Arpaio has used his power to investigate and intimidate political opponents and whether his office misappropriated government money, sources said.

The standoff comes just weeks after the Justice Department sued Arizona and Gov. Jan Brewer (R) because of the state’s new immigration law, heightening tensions over the issue ahead of November’s midterm elections. The renewed debate has focused attention on Arpaio, a former D.C. police officer who runs a 3,800-employee department, and a state at the epicenter of the controversy over the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.

So who is threatening the “rare” lawsuit?  Gee, it looks like its our old (golfing?) buddy and former Casa de Maryland board member, Thomas Perez.   Who could have guessed!

In an Aug. 3 letter to Arpaio’s attorneys, Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the civil rights division, said the sheriff’s office had declined repeated requests to turn over documents and meet with investigators. Without cooperation by Tuesday, the letter said, the government would file suit “to compel access to the requested documents, facilities and personnel.”

I’m gonna keep asking the same question I asked here Did two bright leaders of the MD GOP think they would somehow benefit from endorsing Perez for the Obama Justice Department job?  To be sure Perez, having been an early supporter of the Obama campaign and part of the Obama transition team, was a sure bet for the job. So why did John Kane (husband of Ehrlich running mate Mary Kane) and Tony O’Donnell (minority leader of the Maryland House of Delegates) think they needed to give what appears to be a Maryland GOP blessing to a man Byron York recently called a “zealot.”

Are Kane and O’Donnell seeing any bennies yet?   You can be sure that we are on the hunt to see how Perez will be helping the MD GOP.   Afterall, he owes them one.

  1. Let’s just put it this way: if for some reason Sheriff Joe decides to leave his job in this state, there will be many, many places that will want him to do the exact same “crack downs” for them where they are in their states! What on earth is law enforcement there for, if not to enforce the laws, no matter who it is that is breaking them?!

  2. […] Far Left plans to bring about their borderless socialist dream world.  Holder and his friends (Tom Perez included) surely think the colonization of America that they encourage will work in their political […]
