I remember very clearly how scared the environmentalist were in the mid 1970′s when Time magazine ran a couple of stories about the pending ice age, here (Newsweek too, here).  They weren’t worried about their global warming hypothesis being shot to hell, they hadn’t yet settled on that theory as a means to control us.  It was more like OMG we are going to die!

Now comes word, hat tip Gateway Pundit, that new statistics have been quietly released that indicate, oops! it definitely is not warming across the globe!

The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years.

Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.

Time magazine could now just recycle its cover stories from nearly 4 decades ago!

As for you, throw away the bike, drive a big honkin’ (polluting) SUV—save the planet from freezing!

It could be perfectly innocent, but when I saw this completely un-newsworthy story about exiting Obama Chief of Staff (and former mayor of Chicago), Bill Daley, tossing a White House good-bye party replete with artery-clogging pizza, buttery popcorn and cheesecake (flown in from Chicago), I saw a message to White House food czar Michelle.  Take that ……!

Here is the “news” about Daley’s “surprise:”

In an exclusive chat with Sneed this week, former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley sounded relieved and happy his tour of duty was finally over.

“I can’t wait to come back,” said Daley, whose abrupt resignation earlier this month flummoxed President Barack Obama.  [Daley had said he would stay until November 2012, but he suddenly remembered he had grandchildren to play with!--ed]

◆ Update: Now that all the hoopla over Bill’s decision to quit “has quieted down,” Daley tells Sneed he plans to spend time figuring out “what I really want to do.”

But before Daley heads home Friday, he has a surprise in store.

◆ Upshot: “I’m tossing a party to say goodbye to the White House staff with a ‘Taste of Chicago,’ ” he said.

◆ To wit: Daley told Sneed he has ordered a late-night air shipment of pizza, popcorn and cheesecake sent to the White House mess (cafeteria) for a noon surprise Friday.

Remember Jodi Kantor’s book!  It came out in the same week Daley resigned!  Kantor painted a very troubling picture of a White House staff in constant squabbling mode often roiled by complaints from First Lady Michelle Obama and her staff, particularly Valerie Jarrett.  The Daily Beast makes that point here.

But, I think the final straw for Daley was Kantor’s revelation that when Michelle and Valerie Jarrett worked for Daley in Chicago in 1991 they complained about the “white” boys running Chicago.  Here is Lynn Sweet writing at the Chicago Sun-Times about that incident two decades ago:

Mrs. Obama worked in the Daley administration between Sept. 16, 1991, and April 30, 1993, according to City of Chicago personnel records. She was hired by Jarrett, then Daley’s deputy chief of staff.

Kantor writes Mrs. Obama “disapproved of how closely Daley held power, surrounding himself with three or four people who seemed to let few outsiders in — a concern she would echo years later with her own husband.

“…She particularly resented the way power in Illinois was locked up generation after generation by a small group of families, all white Irish Catholic — the Daleys in Chicago, the Hynes and Madigans statewide.”

When Jarrett was forced out of City Hall in 1995 — even though she was close to Daley — “the Obamas were horrified, their worst suspicions about the world confirmed.”

Don’t you think it’s a fascinating coincidence that Kantor’s book release and Daley’s resignation occurred on the same day—January 9th, and a day after Lynn Sweet wrote that column above.

* Kantor also has lots of stories in “The Obama’s” about how Michelle and Emanuel were constantly at loggerheads in the White House too!

The Hagerstown Herald Mail today reports on where the Plan Maryland controversy stands:

At the heart of a battle over a new state planning initiative is whether anything in it is new.

On Thursday, another round played out, as legislators from rural areas insisted PlanMaryland will mean a significant shift toward centralized control, while the state’s planning secretary assured that criticism is misguided and exaggerated.

The fight is expected to intensify as opponents recruit more lawmakers to their cause and try to combat the plan through legislation. A hearing on one bill is scheduled for Thursday.

O’Malley administration: go to sleep, go to sleep…there is nothing to worry about!

Many legislators and local governments aren’t convinced by the state’s assurances.

Four dissatisfied counties — Washington, Frederick, Carroll and Allegany — have formed a Maryland Rural Counties Coalition and hired lobbyists Bruce C. Bereano and William R. Miles to represent them.

Bereano said Friday that opponents have made a good deal of progress with their plans to file legislation and testify at bill hearings.

Even though Hall told the Environmental Matters Committee that PlanMaryland doesn’t create any new regulations or laws, Bereano said there’s “a very strong feeling” it should go through the legislature for review. Opponents have filed bills that would make that requirement explicit.

Del. Michael D. Smigiel Sr., R-Caroline/Cecil/Kent/Queen Anne’s, and Del. Galen R. Clagett, D-Frederick, filed separate bills in October that would require the General Assembly to approved a state development plan.

Two Republicans in the Washington County delegation — Dels. Michael J. Hough and Neil C. Parrott — co-sponsored Smigiel’s bill.

Clagett’s bill is scheduled for a hearing before the Environmental Matters Committee on Thursday.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is using “training” techniques designed and perfected through the work of radical revolutionaries beginning with the father of “community organizing” himself, the atheist Saul Alinsky.

The phrase “community organizer” first came to the attention of the general public in 2008 when we were told that that is what Barack Obama was—first and foremost a community organizer.  Most of us said, Huh?   Sadly, we know so much more now.  [Is Alinsky hanging in the White House?]

Before I get to the classic political “training” session Catholics are receiving in Maryland, let me tell you about this presentation on Real Catholic TV (Catholic Investigative Agency) entitled, the CCHD and Saul Alinsky.  I knew a good bit of the information presented but never had clearly in my mind the time-line for the “injection of the poison” where the church became a conduit for the whole concept of the ‘redistribution of wealth’ and was set adrift from its stated goal of focusing on life and the evils of abortion.

The TV production is a little over an hour in length, but presenter Michael Voris shows us the time-line for the creation of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and its now notorious political work through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development which funds groups that promote abortion and gay marriage.   Its roots are traced back to Alinsky.

Voris tells us that the USCCB operates on a budget today of abut $140,000,000 and that it receives $50-60 million from you—the taxpayer.  They take your money to organize against you!

You really must watch the film. But, briefly we learn that Alinsky early on “married the church to the labor movement” in Chicago.   He organized first the Back of the Yards Council (1938) and then the Industrial Areas Foundation (the IAF) in 1941.  The IAF was founded as a “school for professional radicals.”   It went on to train such Leftwing luminaries as Heather Booth (Midwest Academy) and of course the now famous Barack Hussein Obama.    Today, Voris says, the IAF* gets as much as 16% of the CCHD’s pot of money.

Alinsky understood he had to work through a large network of people who would be soft on what came to be known as “social justice.”  He befriended a young priest in Chicago and through him a whole line of Catholic priests who met at Notre Dame over the next 14 years sending the “poison” throughout the church in the US.   In fact, remember when Obama spoke at Notre Dame and a controversy swirled about a pro-abortion President giving a commencement speech at a Catholic university?   Voris contends that Obama was giving his victory speech with his shout-out to the deceased cardinal who helped him come to power.

Again, watch the presentation at Real Catholic TV yourself, there is just too much for me to do it ‘justice’ here and I want to get on to how all this is now manifesting itself in Maryland.

“Community organizing” by the religious Left in Maryland

On January 10th, one of three political activist training sessions was held with the Rev. Chris Posch ‘officiating.’ Posch is the director of the Office of Hispanic Ministries at the Diocese of Wilmington.  You can see a photo of him, here, in a July 2011 newsletter of the Global Solidarity Project.

At the outset I want to do away with this notion that it is the humane and Christian thing to do—to defend the poor and struggling illegal immigrant—fine, but don’t dare foist your view on others.  I can respect that view as long as their “Christian” desire to be good people recognizes that the illegal alien has by definition broken the law!   If Catholics individually still wish to defend those illegal actions, that is fine, but those of us who do not condone law breaking should not be forced (shamed!) to pay the law breakers!

I would respect the Catholic Church leadership (and maybe even return to the church myself) if they said, we will give them charity through our own private money!   Don’t priests, such as the good Father Posch, see that it is STEALING  to take tax dollars from one group of people with modest incomes and redistribute it to another group, especially a group that is here illegally?

How about if the Catholic Church pays for the college educations of illegal aliens!

Here is an idea!  Right now the Catholic Church pays no taxes.  How about if the state of Maryland taxes them on their income and taxes their real estate.  Then that money (surely a substantial sum) could go into a special fund for all sorts of handouts to illegal aliens!

O.K. I digressed, back to the January 10th training session.  Mary Ellen Russell, Executive Director of the Maryland Catholic Conference, kicked off the session.  But, also speaking were Christopher Ross and Kathy Dempsey.  Looks like they brought almost the entire staff!

They proceeded to present a session on your basic Alinsky-style community organizing strategy that has been perfected now over decades (while the average conservative American went about our daily lives of work and family).   They want what they call “Parish Advocates” in every parish in Maryland for their ‘Justice for Maryland Immigrants’ campaign to defeat a referendum on the Dream Act should Joseph Sandler and the DNC fail to win in court and the Dream Act is on the ballot in the fall.

They even supplied a script political activists could use when calling the parish priest for permission to place important activist announcements in church bulletins.

The over 25 pages of materials handed out to meeting attendees is a treasure trove of information on the Catholic campaign to defeat Maryland taxpayers.   One document of interest to me is the one entitled, The Movements Dark Origins that could have been written by the hate mongers at the Southern Poverty Law Center but appears under the authorship of Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien.   It is an attack on the three major immigration control groups—Federation for American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA and the Center for Immigration Studies.

So, the bottomline for me, is that if the Catholic Church wants to get involved in partisan political lobbying and campaigning, let’s start collecting tax dollars from them so they can help pay for their Leftist dreams.

Frankly, the political non-profit Left would wither and die if they had to pay, without taxpayer support,  for their own political campaigns.

*The Industrial Areas Foundation is operating in Maryland as I mentioned here back in March.  Action in Montgomery is an IAF affiliate.

CASA and unnamed plaintiffs (illegal aliens!) are trying to keep the so-called Dream Act off the ballot in November after 130,000 signatures were collected asking that the law be subject to a referendum.

Gov. O’Malley happily signed the bill last spring surrounded by illegal alien props.  Check out the post I wrote at the time where one O’Malley prop (a kid with the fictitious name “Dustin“) admits he entered the US on his own steam three years ago without any parents—not as a young child as propagandists would have you believe—and is now demanding we subsidize his college eduction.

Here is the WBAL/AP story today:

Attorneys have given arguments about whether a Maryland bill to allow in-state tuition for illegal immigrants under certain circumstances should be put to voters in November.

Joseph Sandler, who argued on behalf of the measure’s supporters, said Friday the bill is not subject to a referendum because it involves funding of state government programs.

“Just as any bill that provides for the state’s operations is not subject to referendum because it cannot be interrupted, this is that kind of situation,” Sandler told WBAL News after today’s hearing.

I find it so interesting that no reporter ever comments on who Sandler is!  See his photo at the story—just your average baggy-suited old lawyer-looking guy, right?  Here is the caption:

Just “one of the attorneys!”   Underscoring how important this case is to the hard Left, CASA is represented by the long-time general counsel of the Democratic National Committee!   I have an entire category on Sandler* here at PTPR with 27 posts on the guy you might call the DNC’s hitman or silencer.    Here is a little rundown of his bio I put together last summer:

Harvard-educated Sandler is well-known for his role as a “silencer” as we noted in a post here in June.

~Sandler tried to silence Glenn Beck—to keep him from talking about Van Jones.

~Sandler silenced those clamoring in 2008 for Obama’s birth certificate.

~Sandler tried to silence Robert Spencer and keep him from talking about Muslim extremists.

~Sandler tried to silence the real Tea Party with the dirty trick of setting up phony Tea Parties.

~Sandler was involved in legal challenges to silence critics of gay marriage (by endorsing the plan to post all their names on the internet and thus subject them to potential harassment).

~Sandler is trying to silence those who want photo IDs for voting.

So you see CASA de Maryland, O’Malley and the Democratic Party cannot afford to lose this in Blue Maryland.  Consequently the Washington, DC big dog Sandler was in Annapolis today.

Now back to the WBAL story.  Lawyers for the defendants (which includes MDPetitions.com) asked why some of the plaintiffs are anonymous and here is what the court heard:

The plaintiffs in this case include CASA of Maryland and several illegal immigrant students whose names are listed as John Doe and Jane Doe.

Lawyers for the petition drive argued that those anonymous plaintiffs  should not have legal standing to bring the lawsuit.

Another attorney for the plaintiffs, Brett Marston, argued that the students remained anonymous because they feared retaliation from anti-immigration activists.  Marston mentioned the group Help Save Maryland by name. Marston noted the Southern Poverty Law Center has called Help Save Maryland a “nativist extremist” organization.

Birds of a feather!

Everyone knows that the Southern Poverty Law Center is a hate group that uses thuggish tactics on anyone or any group it disagrees with.  They are the masters of personal destruction.  Indeed, Sandler himself, as I pointed out above, is famous for his intimidation tactics.   So, it is understandable that these two—Joseph Sandler and the Southern Poverty Law Center— have teamed up to call other groups “extremists.”  And, they assume since they use intimidation, we would too!

Finally, Sandler and O’Malley are rich guys, maybe they could pay for “Dustin’s” college education out of their own deep pockets instead of stealing from hardworking Americans (the 99%!) to pay for their new Democrat voters.

LOL! If Dustin would announce that he was planning on becoming a Republican, that would be the end (de pronto!) of his subsidized college education!

Jerome Corsi writing at World Net Daily reports on what happened in a Georgia court yesterday where Obama’s lawyers failed to appear.

From WND:

Georgia citizens today delivered sworn testimony to a court that Barack Obama is slam-dunk disqualified from having his name on the 2012 presidential ballot in the state, because his father never was a U.S. citizen, which prevents him from qualifying as a “natural-born citizen” as the U.S. Constitution requires for a president.

The historic hearing was the first time that a court has accepted arguments on the merits of the controversy over Obama’s status. His critics say he never met the constitutional requirements to occupy the Oval Office, and the states and Congress failed in their obligations to make sure only a qualified president is inaugurated. His supporters, meanwhile, argue he won the 2008 election and therefore was “vetted” by America.

The hearing was before Judge Michael Malihi of the Georgia state Office of State Administrative Hearings.

The primary argument that those who brought the case charge is that because his father was a Kenyan (British citizen at that time), that would make Obama not a “natural born citizen” as envisioned by the founders (they say).  Most Americans would like to see the US Supreme Court rule on this point simply to get the issue resolved one way or the other for all future elections.

He [expert on the Constitution cited by Corsi] told WND the fact that Obama’s father was a Kenyan citizen should be sufficient.

“That is much stronger than the question of where he was born,” he said. “That alone is evidence. … They don’t need anything additional.”

Other allegations were raised by an attorney for the plaintiffs:

Taitz argued multiple prongs of the case: that the birth certificate released by the White House is a forgery; that he probably has had several citizenships, such as when he was listed in Indonesia as an Indonesian citizen; and that he’s been known under the names Obama, Soetoro and Soebarkah.

She also had a private investigator, Susan Daniels, testify that it appears Obama is using a fraudulent Social Security number.

Documents and imaging expert Doug Vogt asserted the birth documentation released by the White House was a creation of a software program and not a scan of any original document. That would mean Obama’s documentation, despite what the White House released in April, is still under wraps.

It would be nice to have all these issues finally put to rest, but….

Obama and his attorney boycotted the proceedings…

Fearing a referendum

Hagerstown Tea Party founder Parrott, who led the successful petition drive to get the Dream Act (taxpayer subsidy for college education for illegals) on the ballot in 2012, is reporting that the Governor, who must have wins on both the Dream Act and on Gay Marriage in order for his political career to advance, is actually attempting to find a way to make the Gay Marriage bill an appropriations bill not subject to the referendum process.   Such a move by the Governor is a testament to his fear of the Parrott Petition machine where grassroots conservative activists stand ready to pound the pavement again looking for signatures.

The 2012 election implications for two hot button initiatives on the same ballot were discussed by blogger Todd Eberly at the FreeStater blog.  Eberly is a political science professor at St. Mary’s College.  (emphasis mine)

To understand the potential impact of these two measures on the 2012 vote one need only review the new poll from Gonzales Research. The poll finds voters evenly divided on both measures with 49% opposing the DREAM Act and 48% supporting it. On same-sex marriage 49% favor it and 47% oppose it. The more interesting results, however, come from the results among specific voting blocs.

Democrats (62%) and Independents (56%) support same-sex marriage, but 76% of Republicans oppose it. Independents and Republicans make-up 40% of the state’s electorate and the high level of opposition among Republicans coupled with the 4 in 10 Democrats and Independents opposed helps explain the state’s split support. The more interesting division, however, is between Democrats overall and black voters (nearly all of whom vote Democratic in Maryland). Though 62% of Democrats support same-sex marriage, nearly the same share – 60% – of black voters oppose it. This represents a significant division among the Democratic electorate.

Eberly goes on to discuss the US Senate race and how these issues might impact it.  And, then says the following about Congressional Districts 6 and 8.

In the newly drawn 6th Congressional District, the ballot measures may save Roscoe Bartlett’s job. Based on a vote analysis of the prior and newly adopted congressional districts one would expect a Democrat to win the new 6th district in a presidential election year. But, increased turn-out by conservatives and social conservative would likely make the electorate more similar to the 2010 midterm. In that case, Bartlett may just squeak to victory – dashing Democratic plans to claim a new seat in Congress.

Turn-out by social conservatives and any degree of dissension within the ranks of key Democratic voting blocs could spell trouble for Chris Van Hollen and his newly drawn and decidedly less Democratic 8th district as well as Dutch Ruppersberger in the 2nd district where black voters are crucial to his reelection success.

In the end, Maryland is a democratic state. Republicans have won statewide elections only twice in the last 32 years. Odds favor a strong democratic showing in 2012, but do not discount the impact of these two ballot measure and their potential to disrupt what would otherwise be a boring election year in Maryland.

Does O’Malley have it in for Rep. Chris Van Hollen?

I’ve been wondering.  While the Dems are busy helping to cause friction between Republicans in the Presidential race (not that they need any help!), could the Dems have the same internal c*** going on?   I know conventional wisdom is that O’Malley, in drawing the new district lines, wants to reclaim District 6 for the Dems (ugh! when I moved here 25 years ago, believe it or not, it was a Democratic district!), but why would O’Malley significantly weaken the 8th District and thus make it harder for Van Hollen to hold onto that seat?

It is also conventional wisdom that O’Malley wants to run for the US Presidency someday, but surely the fallback position has got to be Senator Barbara Mikulski’s seat for this career pol.  Is it possible that he sees Van Hollen as his competition for the seat and has maneuvered to weaken him?   Just wondering!

Today I see that Pamela Geller (Atlas Shrugs) has received her document dump from a Freedom of Information request to the US. Department of Justice.

Here are just a few snippets from her article of a couple of days ago at American Thinker:

In what promises to be an enormous document dump, I have received the first in a series of DOJ bundles in response to my FOIA request filed close to a year ago. Specifically, I asked for “records relating to the meeting of the ‘Monthly Outreach Meeting’ with Muslim and Arab groups at the Civil Rights Division. Specifically, include lists of attendees at each monthly meeting, the agenda of each meeting and any minutes or summary prepared subsequent to each meeting. Please also specifically note the meetings at which the Attorney General of the United States attended.”

The principal impact of reading through the material is the sheer bulk of it. Hundreds and hundreds of pages of emails, documenting nearly daily friendly contact, consultation, cooperation and collaboration between the DOJ and Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood groups. One thing is clear, the Muslim Brotherhood has fully infiltrated command and control at the Department of Justice civil rights division.

Surprise (Not!) here is Perez:

Going through the first batch, what struck me almost immediately was the casual familiarity between ISNA, the ADC, and senior officials of the Department of Justice, all the way up to Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez. They discuss lunch, vacations, job changes — always with the Muslim Brotherhood groups pushing their narrative, even in these casual exchanges.

All of you Republicans who have been schmoozing Grover Norquist’s pal Suhail Kahn, take note.  While you schmooze him, he sucks up along with members of the Muslim Brotherhood in the inner sanctum at the OBAMA Justice Department!   XOXOXO!

The depth and the breadth of the penetration is difficult to fathom until you see all of these documents going back and forth, and the players, who include Nihad “I am in support of the Hamas movement” Awad of Hamas-tied CAIR; Suhail Khan, who accepted an award in 2000 from the now-imprisoned al-Qaeda financier Abdurrahman Alamoudi; and James Yee. James Yee a Muslim chaplain at Guantanamo who was charged with sedition, aiding the enemy, spying, espionage, and failure to obey a general order. He was charged along with three others. The charges were later dropped, when Major General Geoffrey Miller cited “national security concerns that would arise from the release of the evidence.” The notorious Yee gave an interview on Syrian television in Arabic, in which he repeated Gitmo detainees’ lies of Quran abuse on the part of the U.S. Military.

Those three and many others received a September 8, 2011 letter from Perez touting all the DOJ’s actions on behalf of Muslims, including a suit against the city of Lilburn, Georgia for resisting the expansion of a mosque and amicus participation calling for dismissal of a suit brought by Murfreesboro, Tennessee patriots against an Islamic supremacist mosque there.

Read it all!  And, after you are through weeping, come on out to the MD CAN/Franklin Center Investigative Journalism workshop and learn how to do what Pamela and a whole host of others are doing to investigate and expose those who are working against us and our national security.  The mainstream media isn’t going to do it!

IT APPEARED to provide incontrovertible proof that global warming was accelerating faster than even the most doom-laden scientists had predicted.

There was considerable alarm when the word’s [world's] most authoritative atlas printed a map which showed that Greenland was rapidly turning green.

However, experts from around the globe pointed out that the cataclysmic chart had no scientific support and was contradicted by all of the most recent satellite images.

Now the Scottish map-makers responsible for the disappearance of 115,830 square miles of polar ice have admitted publicly they were wrong.

As an act of contrition, The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World cartographers have produced a new map which restores Greenland’s ice cover.

Of course the not-so-funny part is that the beat goes on at the United Nation (Agenda 21) and with Governor Martin O’Malley’s Plan Maryland — programs designed to take away your freedoms (your property rights, the basis of our freedom!) based on bogus scientific information about global warming.

Power-grabbing Perez is at it again.  We reported several times in recent months that the Asst. US Attorney General for Civil Rights, Maryland’s gift to Obama and Holder, Thomas Perez, has let loose an attack on police departments from coast to coast.  (Washington state, Arizona, Alabama and now Connecticut).

Acting as judge and jury it looks like he has declared the East Haven policemen guilty before any trial has begun.  While the Republican mayor of East Haven says the officers are innocent until proven guilty, here.  What a novel idea!  (In just the few minutes I’ve been working on this, I see the Hartford-Courant has taken down the clip where the mayor defends the officers and replaced it with an attack on the mayor!  The reporters name is Perez—ed)

BRIDGEPORT — The FBI arrested three East Haven police officers and the local police union president Tuesday on conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges, saying the men had engaged in a campaign of civil rights abuses against Latino residents.

The arrests come as part of a “long-term and ongoing” federal investigation into actions by members of the East Haven department against members of the Latino community, said U.S. Attorney David B. Fein.

Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Division, said Tuesday he looks forward to working with the police department to establish a system to prevent future abuses from occurring.

Perez helped lead a civil investigation that concluded in December and found a pattern of discrimination within the department.

Until I began reading J. Christian Adams book a few days ago (“Injustice, Exposing the Racial Agenda of the Obama Justice Department”), I did not completely understand the significance of the Holder appointment or the efforts by Senators Jeff Sessions and Tom Coburn in the US Senate Judiciary Committee to hold up the Perez nomination in 2009.

According to Adams, who resigned from the Justice Department over the Department’s decision to dismiss the New Black Panthers voter intimidation case in Philadelphia, the Justice Department, with Holder and Perez at the helm, have launched a “racialist” agenda to show discrimination against anyone of color by whites, but never to undertake cases where whites are the victims.

In the minds of Holder and Perez, it is payback time.

So why, why, why did Tony O’Donnell help Perez get the appointment?  We have never been given any explanation or an apology.

In 2009, Maryland House Minority Leader Tony O’Donnell pronounced Perez “fair-minded,” in a letter he didn’t have to write,  undercutting the argument that Sessions was making that Perez was on a mission for the likes of CASA de Maryland and the ethnic grievance lobby and couldn’t thus be “fair” as the head of the Civil Rights Division.

Here is the letter O’Donnell sent to Chairman Patrick Leahy of the Judiciary Committee on April 23, 2009 where O’Donnell gets in line with Martin O’Malley, Steny Hoyer, Chris Van Hollen and other distinguished Democrats to sing Perez’s praises.

As Minority Leaderof the Maryland House of Delegates, I am pleased to support the nomination of Thomas Perez for the position of Assistant AttorneyGeneral for Civil Rights.In my dealings with Secretary Perez, I have always found him to be fair-minded and willing to listen to a variety of views on an issue.

It is my belief that the reason Tom works so hard to find comprehensive solutions to the everyday problems Americans face because he truly has their best interests at heart. He is a committed public servant. I am confident that Tom will lead the Division with commitment and integrity.  For those reasons, I support his nomination and strongly urge his confirmation.  [LOL! Commitment to what, that is the question--ed]

Is their relationship over legalizing gambling?  I really have no idea, just throwing an idea out there because O’Donnell has never explained what was so important to motivate him to undercut fellow Republicans in the US Senate.

One theory bouncing around is that Perez is a slots man and so is O’Donnell.

Have any of you been to the gambling casino at Charlestown, WV?  Just look around and you will see it isn’t the rich people playing the slots—it’s poor people and in Charlestown the Hispanics are in evidence as many of the laborers around the track there are poor and probably illegal.  So why is some bleeding heart like Perez supporting essentially taxing poor people—that is what government-endorsed gambling is after all, a tax.

Here is Perez supporting the Maryland racing industry and slots.  And, here he is getting blasted by fellow Democrats for supporting what everyone knows is a tax on the poor.

O’Donnell supported Perez’s findings here in the Baltimore Sun (August 2007):

Del. Anthony J. O’Donnell, the minority leader from Southern Maryland who was briefed by O’Malley on the report last night, said there is potential for common ground between Republicans and the governor on slots.

“I think there is a growing recognition that raising $1.5 billion in new taxes or cutting $1.5 billion of the state budget cannot be the solution by itself,” O’Donnell said. “The only other proposal on the table is slots. In very real terms, I think there is growing recognition that it has to happen.”

So, essentially taxing those who can least afford it was the joint Perez/O’Donnell solution?

Any other theories about how these two are linked?

Sort of related:  I see this week that tax guru Grover Norquist is pushing gambling in Texas.  Shouldn’t Grover be pushing the cut-the-budget side of the ledger rather than the increase-the-revenue side through gambling—through taking money from the poor?  And, didn’t Grover learn any lessons on the subject of gambling from his good buddy Jack Abramoff?

Follow the money folks, follow the money!  (and that means for ‘white hats’ like Perez too!)
