Pamela Geller (Atlas Shrugs) says “yes” in her article yesterday at American Thinker.
Your turkey could be Halal!
If you care about the principle of unknowingly being supplied Islamic blessed meat, or you care about the humane slaughter of animals, you should read this:
Did you know that the turkey you’re going to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day this Thursday is probably halal? If it’s a Butterball turkey, then it certainly is — whether you like it or not.
In a little-known strike against freedom, yet again, we are being forced into consuming meat slaughtered by means of a torturous method: Islamic slaughter.
Halal slaughter involves cutting the trachea, the esophagus, and the jugular vein, and letting the blood drain out while saying “Bismillah allahu akbar” — in the name of Allah the greatest. Many people refuse to eat it on religious grounds. Many Christians, Hindus or Sikhs and Jews find it offensive to eat meat slaughtered according to Islamic ritual (although observant Jews are less likely to be exposed to such meat, because they eat kosher).
Others object because of the cruelty to animals that halal slaughter necessitates. Where are the PETA clowns and the ridiculous celebs who pose naked on giant billboards for PETA and “animal rights”? They would rather see people die of cancer or AIDS than see animals used in drug testing, but torturous and painful Islamic slaughter is OK.
Still others refuse to do so on principle: why should we be forced to conform to Islamic norms? It’s Islamic supremacism on the march, yet again.
Popeyes Chicken Halal too!
Googling around just now I came across a controversy just this month in Canada where Muslim owners of Popeyes Chicken franchises are up in arms because their supplier in Canada is going to machine slaughter. I see also as I searched that some Maryland Popeyes restaurants are serving Halal chicken. And, remember the related story about the Baltimore couple who bought a Church’s Chicken franchise and found out they were prohibited from selling pork, here.
Here is the story about Popeyes from The Toronto Star via Creeping Sharia:
A group of Muslim restaurant franchisees is fighting fast-food chain Popeyes Louisiana Chicken in court over the right to sell hand-slaughtered Halal meat for religious reasons.
The battle in Ontario Superior Court comes after the Atlanta-based franchise moved to replace the chicken supply with machine-killed birds in 14 Toronto restaurants. The company says it’s still Halal-certified; the franchisees claim the machine method is against the beliefs of a majority of Muslims.
I found this last paragraph interesting:
He explained that for many Muslims, machine-slaughtering cannot be considered Halal because it’s impossible to bless each bird at such a high speed and there are questions surrounding who turns on the machine if he or she is not a believer.
So, does this prohibition extend to anyone who handles the meat? Would employees in meatpacking have to be “believers” so as not to taint the meat? I don’t know, but why should we even be having this discussion in America—anyone who wants their food handled in some special way is free to figure out how to obtain it without the rest of us having to be bothered with their special, and in this case religious, needs.
And MD CAN organizers were called “Islamophobes” just for suggesting that maybe Sharia Law was creeping into Maryland, here.
