This is the latest from the great ‘mentioners’ on the battle for the heart and soul of the MDGOP. Hat tip Richard Falknor at Blue Ridge Forum. The Baltimore Sun reported earlier that Murphy was mulling it over, looks like the mulling was short-lived and this sounds like a definitive “NO!”
From the Washington Post:
Here’s yet another possible contender for chairman of the Maryland Republican Party: Sen. Alex X. Mooney (R-Frederick).
Mooney, a three-term state senator, lost a close race for reelection Nov. 2 to his Democratic challenger, former Frederick mayor Ron Young.
In an interview, Mooney said he would probably decide this week whether to pursue the GOP chairmanship.
“There are people who’ve asked me to consider it, and I’ve told them I’d consider it,” he said.
Read it all.
Word is that Mooney is an excellent fundraiser and a well known defender of the taxpayer, but his position on the hot button issue of illegal immigration is not clear to most observers.
Establishment Republicans don’t like it, but Tea Partiers care passionately about illegal immigration and it has been my observation that the whole Tea Party movement really began in the summer of 2007 when the McCain/Kennedy/Bush Amnesty bill went down in flames!
It’s mistaken to suggest there is a single Tea Party position on immigration. libertarians comprise the Tea Party just as much as social conservatives do and many libertarians, myself among them, recognize the immorality and economic inefficiency of our current immigration laws and favor a return to the situation pre-1882, or at least something more open than the current laws.
