The Washington Post has a story yesterday about how much money is flowing in this year’s election cycle. You can read it here. In typical Washington Post fashion they have more Republican groups listed so it looks like those tilting to the right have more money involved. I bet there are a lot of big outfits on the Left that they have left off the list. The WaPo is probably getting ready to say if things go badly for the Democrats it’s only because they were out-funded by the Republicans.
That said, check out the graphic that goes with the story. They have listed two groups closely affiliated with the Tea Party, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) and Freedom Works, as two heavy hitters at $45 million and $10 million respectively. I know it’s probably silly and naive to think that Tea Party grassroots groups can win with just passion and hard work, but it gives me the creeps wondering who is funding AFP and Freedom Works. And, are those two giants simply establishment insiders who are busy roping in the idealistic grassroots Tea Party activists as cover?
Incidentally, Democrats concerned with the hijacking of their party by radical Leftwing ideologues should be asking who is funding their “grassroots.” In fact, I don’t think that right now the Democrats have any real grassroots—people meeting around kitchen tables to plan their political action with their own time and money.
Oh, and let me be clear, all of the local Tea Party groups I know aren’t getting a dime from any big outfits!
